It turns out Tesla isn't the only car manufacturer experiencing a mass recall for its video-game-esque car because of pedal-related issues. Now a bunch of drivable Mario Kart toys are being recalled because they seems to pose a significant crash hazard to their drivers.

JAKKs Pacific, a California-based toy company, recalled 17,500 units of its Mario Kart 24V Ride-On Racer Cars on April 25 because of a crash hazard related to its battery-powered acceleration pedal. According to the United States Consumer Product and Safety Commission, if debris gets clogged in the $400 Mario Kart’s acceleration pedal, it can cause the pedal to stick even if the rider’s foot isn’t pressing down on it.

“The firm has received 65 reports of incidents of debris-clogged pedals sticking, of which 15 of the vehicles crashed into permanent structures with one minor injury, a chafed hand,” the United States Consumer Product and Safety Commission wrote in its recall report.

For anyone who already purchased the Mario Kart from online and brick-and-mortar stores like Amazon, Walmart, or Target, between October 2022 to January 2024, the United States Consumer Product and Safety Commission recommends that users immediately stop using it and contact Jakks Pacific to receive a free repair kit, which includes a free replacement pedal and installation instructions.

If there’s an upside to this whole debacle, it's that gamers will have a genuine experience modding their karts just like they were in Mario Kart 8.

In short, you'll want to consider what type of gamer you are and look at these main factors:

Gamers on a tight budget don’t have to make as many sacrifices as they once did, but there’s still a need for some compromise. In general, you can go for a higher resolution, or you can go for a higher refresh rate, but you sadly won’t be able to snag both in a budget gaming monitor.

1080p remains the standard go-to resolution in budget displays. Nintendo’s Switch successor console, referred to by many as the “Switch 2,” will feature magnetic Joy-Con controllers, backward compatibility, and a host of other new features, according to the latest batch of rumors.

These alleged details about the yet-to-be-revealed device first showed up from Spanish outlet Vandal and were later cooperated by third-party Switch accessory manufacturer Mobapad. They say that the console will swap away from the railed lock method used by the current Switch and its Joy-Cons in favor of larger, electromagnetic suction controllers. If the rumors are accurate, players can also expect metal SL and SR buttons as well as one additional new button on the side of each controller. Mobapad adds that the new controllers will still feature HD rumble.

Nintendo hasn’t officially pulled back the curtain on the Switch 2, much less confirmed what kind of controllers it will support. If the rumors are to be believed, it sounds like players will at least be able to continue using their old Joy-Cons and Pro-Controllers as well as their original physical and digital Switch games. It would no doubt be nice to head into another Nintendo generation with some degree of backward compatibility, though its unclear how or if the old Joy-Cons would be able to pair with the magnetic new console.

Mobapad claims that the Switch 2 will continue to support USB-C, with its dock said to feature minor changes to its appearance while delivering 4K resolution. The site also references the new dock’s adjustable “damping bracket on the back,” though it is possible they are talking about the Switch 2’s kickstand. The device’s screen is said to be an eight-inch display that supports 1080p resolution.

Nintendo’s Switch successor hasn’t been revealed, but numerous reports have stated that the console is just on the horizon. VGC reported last year that Nintendo was targeting a 2024 launch for its new gaming tech. However, a Nikkei report from February said that Nintendo was planning to launch in March 2025 instead in order to combat potential scalpers.

Again, it’s unclear if today’s rumors are accurate, so it’s best to take everything with a grain of salt until Nintendo gives us something official to chew on. It’s been over six years since the Nintendo Switch launched in 2017, and after a long and successful reign, you may be wondering what new piece of hardware will be next. We’ve seen updates to the current switch with the OLED and Lite models, though we’re still in the dark on what Nintendo’s next-gen offering could be.

After becoming the 3rd best-selling console in history this year, it’s fair to say that Nintendo might want to keep things close to its chest. Yet, even with all the secrecy surrounding the possibility of a new Nintendo Switch, we’ve collected all the details we could find about the mystery follow-up ahead of its eventual official announcement and release.

Nintendo Switch 2 Release Date - Latest News

While Nintendo hasn’t yet announced any official follow-up to their incredibly successful Nintendo Switch console, there are enough rumors swirling about to make us believe that the next Nintendo console will arrive sometime in 2025 rather than 2024.

In February 2024, the Japanese publication Nikkei suggested that the proposed Nintendo Switch 2 would launch in March 2025 at the earliest, contradicting previous reports. While the article covered information we’ve heard before, like the proposed iterative design scheme, Nikkei did add that the 2025 date was likely due to the company stockpiling consoles to avoid scalping at launch. As any long-term Nintendo fan knows, procuring one of the company’s new consoles can be tricky business. Those who tried will remember how difficult it was to secure a Nintendo Switch at launch in 2017, with the console suffering from inflated pricing on the aftermarket due to crafty resellers.

Adding to the intrigue about a potential date change, it looks like Nintendo won’t be exhibiting at this year’s Gamescom, an annual trade fair held in Cologne, Germany. As reported by GamesIndustry.biz, a representative of Nintendo of Europe issued a statement to the German outlet Games Wirtschaft, confirming the news. The statement reads, "Gamescom is a central event in Nintendo's event calendar. This year, however, after careful consideration, we decided against taking part in Cologne. Instead, players can try out the games for Nintendo Switch as part of other Germany-wide events." This decision, while not unprecedented for major players - PlayStation also missed the event in 2022 and 2023 - does raise the question of what we can expect from Nintendo in the latter half of 2024. Could this be a sign of a major announcement coming or a strategic shift in their marketing approach? Only time will tell.

Nintendo’s president, Shuntaro Furukawa, confirmed in an interview with Nikkei, and translated by VGC, that Nintendo will support the current-gen Switch until at least March 2025. This sentiment is also backed up by previous comments Furukawa made regarding the future of the Nintendo Switch in a financial briefing Q&A in 2022. In this interview, he committed to focusing on “building long-term relationships with our consumers (through Nintendo Accounts)," he went on to reiterate ", While continuing to release new Nintendo Switch software for consumers to enjoy, we aim to maintain relationships across hardware generations through services that utilize Nintendo Accounts and by providing opportunities for them to experience our IP through other non-gaming channels."

Even with all the juicy gossip, it’s best not to hold your breath on what’s coming from the Japanese tech titan’s next console until there is an official announcement; fingers crossed we’ll get that confirmation soon.

Nintendo Switch 2 Models

The latest Nintendo Switch OLED model features a remarkable screen, and it feels like the future of the console, it being the most recent edition to Nintendo’s lineup. However, according to a VGC report, the next-gen Nintendo Switch may potentially feature an LCD screen instead.

The current array of Nintendo Switch models are numerous and were released over the console’s multi-year lifespan, so it’s reasonable to believe there may be several versions of a potential Nintendo Switch follow-up, too.

Nintendo Switch Design - What Will the Nintendo Switch 2 Look Like?

There isn’t a lot of information on how Nintendo’s next-gen console will look, though there are plenty of features in the current-gen Nintendo Switch we’d love to see return for a follow-up console.

VGC reported that development kits for the potential new console are already with partner studios, with sources citing some returning features. According to VGC’s report, the new Nintendo Switch could keep the portability of its predecessor and feature a cartridge slot for physical games.

In May 2023, a patent was filed with the United States Patent Office and published in September, which suggests a potential revamped Joy-Con controller that would hopefully help with the notorious Joy-Con drift issue associated with the Nintendo Switch.

The patent details a magnetic field for controls rather than the plastic circuit boards seen in the current generation console. However, it’s worth mentioning that patents don’t necessarily translate directly to future products, so there’s no guarantee on whether the Nintendo Switch 2 will feature updated Joy-Cons, and we’ll have to wait for official word from Nintendo on that front.

Will the Nintendo Switch 2 be Backwards Compatible?

As rumors swirl about the possibility of a Nintendo Switch 2, the question of backwards compatibility is naturally on everyone's lips. In the absence of any official reveals, there isn’t much to go on at this time. However, in a recent interview with Inverse, the aptly named Nintendo of America president, Doug Bowser, alluded to the future of the brand’s approach to software.

While Bowser opted to deny commenting on anything related to the rumored console, he did talk about the Nintendo Account system that players’ digital libraries are currently tied to on the Nintendo Switch. “In the past, every device we transitioned to had a whole new account system. Creating the Nintendo Account will allow us to communicate with our players if and when we make a transition to a new platform, to help ease that process or transition.” This dedication to the Nintendo Account model could suggest that all of our favorite Nintendo Switch games may work on the company’s next console whenever it lands. Regardless, given the precious little that we know right now, we’ll have to take this information with a pinch of salt and not get ahead of ourselves.

TikTok owner ByteDance would reportedly rather shut down the video-sharing app in the U.S. than sell it should its challenges against a law banning it fail.

Four sources familiar with the situation told Reuters the Chinese company is more likely to remove U.S. residents' access to TikTok rather than sell it to another company or an investment group by the January 19, 2025 deadline. This comes as ByteDance itself declared it won't sell TikTok via a statement on another of its platforms, Toutiao.

“Foreign media reports that ByteDance is exploring the sale of TikTok are untrue,” ByteDance said in the statement (via The Hill). “ByteDance doesn’t have any plan to sell TikTok."

President Joe Biden signed the bill into law on April 24, 2024 — which passed the Senate largely over fears of China accessing U.S. residents' data or using TikTok for surveillance — but ByteDance declared it would "continue to challenge this unconstitutional ban."

A source told Reuters that TikTok's algorithm is too important to ByteDance's overall operations so selling that information is therefore highly unlikely. The app also contributes to just a small portion of its total revenue and daily active users, so a shutdown would have "limited impact" on ByteDance overall.

The U.S. itself accounts for just 5% of ByteDance's overall daily active users, despite it accounting for around 25% of TikTok's overall revenues in 2023, according to Reuters' sources. They also said its main asset, besides the algorithm, is user data and product operations and management.

The law banning TikTok is the furthest the U.S. has gone in an otherwise long and complex relationship with the app. Montana passed state legislation banning it entirely but this is currently being contested in court and therefore not law yet.

The app is banned, however, on any Federal government-issued smartphones and over 30 states including Alabama, Illinois, and Pennsylvania have also banned the use of TikTok on government devices.

The AOC Agon Pro AG456UCZD joins the ranks of OLED gaming monitors as one of its bigger challengers. It has a lot in common with a gargantuan Corsair Xeneon Flex 45WQHD240, albeit without the signature bendable panel of that model. What you get is a 45-inch, OLED ultrawide gaming monitor for $1,399. This might have sounded like a steal a couple years ago, but the OLED gaming monitor market is sizzling right now. So while the AG456UCZD’s detractors aren’t huge, it has to brace itself from some unimpeachably excellent alternatives, even if they’re not all fighting on the exact same footing.

AOC Agon Pro AG456UCZD – Design and Features

The AOC Agon Pro AG456UCZD is a true desk-domineering monitor. With its 45-inch panel, it stretches 39 inches wide and curves tightly forward. On a 48-inch-wide desk, it leaves little space for computer speakers on either side, though it includes speakers of its own. The stand is perhaps an even bigger issue. Shaped like a giant metal boomerang, the stand’s base sticks out a full foot. Setting the AOC Agon Pro AG456UCZD up straight forward, this would see the stand cut right into the mousing area of my two-foot-deep desk, and thus required rotating the stand to an odd angle. The monitor includes a VESA mounting accessory should you want to go that route, though its heft could present issues with many mounts.

From the stand on up, the AOC Agon Pro AG456UCZD shares many design similarities with the AOC Agon Pro AG276QZD I recently tested. The stand features a useful range of adjustments, including a surprising few degrees of rotation. It would have been a plus to see cable routing through the stand, but at least AOC includes a small cable hook on the back of the stand to help keep things tidy. It also built a headphone hanger into the stand, but the size of the display prevents it from being terribly useful.

The thin display panel shows off its looks by not including a large plastic backing on much of its rear. Instead, all of the extra electronics are housed in a smaller section on the back. This area features an angular design and RGB lighting that adds a bit of style but is still rather tame.

Since the main electronics are limited to the center of the rear, the joystick control for the monitor is only really accessible from under the display, and it’s even a little hard to find there. To make up for this, AOC includes a remote control. This provides convenient access to all the features and menus of the monitor, including quick control for volume and brightness.

The AOC Agon Pro AG456UCZD upgrades the USB offerings of its smaller sibling. It includes four USB-A ports on the left side, making them much easier to access than bottom or rear ports in many cases. Those ports can link to a system connected over USB-B or USB-C with a built-in KVM that can automatically toggle between hosts. That USB-C port is also great for laptop users, as it supports DisplayPort 1.4 and 90-watt power delivery.

A pair of HDMI ports will work with consoles or streaming devices, though they are limited to a 100Hz refresh rate at the monitor’s 3440x1440 resolution. To get the full 240Hz refresh rate at 3440x1440, you’ll want to use the full-size DisplayPort connection or USB-C.

Since this monitor is already taking up plenty of space on its own, it’s great to see that AOC has built the power supply into the unit. That wasn’t the case for AOC’s smaller OLED, which required an external power brick.

AOC Agon Pro AG456UCZD – Testing

While all of the recent OLED gaming monitors will share the commendable quality of having effectively infinite contrast, there is still plenty that sets them apart. Some of the differences are obvious, though plenty are subtle enough that only concrete measurements can suss them out. To that end, I’ve tested the AOC Agon Pro AG456UCZD with a SpyderX Elite colorimeter using the monitor's default settings as well as a number of different adjustments to see how they improve, alter, or worsen the quality of the visuals.

Most OLED monitors deliver impressive color, and that’s the case for the AOC Agon Pro AG456UCZD as well. By default, it achieves 100% coverage of sRGB, 92% of AdobeRGB, and 96% of DCI-P3 color spaces. That said, the color isn’t terribly accurate. In fact, it’s a bit of a mess. Many colors see a deviation from the intended target, with a max dE of 13.76 and an average of 3.74. In other words, most of this inaccuracy will be perceptible. If you’re not creating content or a demanding media aficionado, it may not be a big deal.

At default, the contrast measures at infinite, with pitch black pixels alongside an SDR peak brightness of 268.5 nits. The monitor defaults to 90% brightness, though, which sees a max brightness reach around 190.4 nits. Since the monitor also defaults to a Warm color temperature setting, I also check brightness without this, and the default brightness rose to a comfortable 203.1 nits. With the anti-glare coating on the display, this is a reasonable level for office use as long as strong light sources aren’t hitting the screen. Sunlight will easily overwhelm it.

HDR performance is commendable, though. The monitor was able to reach 794 nits when displaying a 10% window, and on a monitor this big, that’s a large area. For the full screen, brightness is capped much lower, reaching only 154 nits. This was in the HDR Native mode, which shines brightest. Other HDR modes sat closer to 630-640 nits.

AOC Agon Pro AG456UCZD – Gaming and Performance

The AOC Agon Pro AG456UCZD is not an excellent all-around display, but it has a lot of love for gamers. The 45-inch panel that’s such a wonder for immersing yourself into games and movies alike could have been a boon for productivity as well. It certainly has the space for some major multi-tasking, and I’ve used a 34-inch ultrawide for work extensively to great success. But the 3440x1440 resolution is simply stretched too far at this level, resulting in softer detail. It also requires a lot more looking around, since things on one side of the screen are physically further from things on the other.

This monitor also suffers from the fringing seen on many of the early OLED gaming monitors from 2022 and early 2023. This issue can see thin lines of the wrong color appear on the edges of other pixels where two colors meet, such as the faint red and green lines that will appear on the sides of a yellow object displayed on a white background. Here in mid-2024, plenty of other OLED monitors have updated panels with different subpixels layouts that don’t suffer from this same fringing. Because the Agon Pro AG456UCZD’s pixels are especially stretched out, the fringing can’t hide underneath sheer pixel density either. Instead, it’s only further highlighted by the low pixel density.

Thankfully, these issues all but vanish in games. The fringing is much harder to spot in games and movies, and even the low pixel density hides itself well in the faster action of a game. While I worked, I noticed these issues, but when I sank in hour after hour in Helldivers 2, the display's merits stood out more. The rich color and contrast brought Terminid and Automaton worlds to life, and the 240Hz refresh rate kept Overwatch 2 running super smooth. The display also benefits from the near-instant pixel response time of OLED to avoid ghosting, so that 240Hz goes even further in gameplay. All of these aspects pair with the extreme size of the display, which quite effectively wraps up my field of vision when sitting at arm’s length.

Some games still don’t play too nicely with ultrawide aspect ratios. As a result, they can look distorted toward the sides of the screen, stretching the visuals, as I saw in Helldivers 2. Others might limit what you can see vertically while stretching less pronouncedly on the horizontal axis, as Overwatch 2 does. Some games simply don’t allow for 21:9 aspect ratios. It’s hit or miss, but even in the games that don’t properly support 21:9, it can still prove impressive in spite of its awkward issues. The center of the display — where your focus is likely to be — also doesn’t run into these issues.

It’s a plus to see the AOC Agon Pro AG456UCZD include speakers, but they are not without issue. They can spit out enough sound to use in place of desktop speakers, but they sound pretty boxed in most of the time, like a loud speaker playing through a thin wall in the next room and resonating a bit inside their housing. The result is audio that’s distorted and overly skewed toward bass. It’s a little easier to accept for music, and it feels explosive enough in games like Helldivers 2, but listening to speech is rough and hard to discern because of that unnatural EQ.

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) announced today it has voted to restore net neutrality in a vote of 3-2.

As a result of the vote, the agency has now been authorized to reclassify internet service providers (ISPs) as common carriers under Title II of the Communications Act. The proposal is almost identical to the original proposal for net neutrality, although the new rules would also provide the agency the ability to block authorization of websites controlled by foreign adversaries. The timing is pretty impeccable, as Biden signed a foreign aid package yesterday that bundled a bill to ban the video-sharing app TikTok.

The agency revealed during today's meeting that it was not, however, planning to regulate pricing.

"We need broadband to reach 100 percent of us — and we need it fast, open, and fair," FCC Chairwoman Jessica Rosenworcel wrote in a post highlighting the new neutrality protections.

The announcement shouldn't come as a huge surprise. Last September, Rosenworcel announced in a speech that a proposal was being submitted to restore the rules, with an initial vote to take place that following month.

Net neutrality was a list of regulations enacted in 2015 during the Obama administration. The rules forbid ISPs such as Comcast and Verizon from doing things such as blocking or slowing down websites. However, it officially ended in April 2018 during the Trump Presidency after FCC chair Ajit Pai led a charge to repeal net neutrality rules.

Today's meeting and Rosenworcel's previous announcement when the proposal was submitted last year echo similar reasons the FCC opted to adopt these rules during the Obama era. Rosenworcel specifically cited the COVID-19 pandemic as a reminder of the importance of Net Neutrality rules.

"Four years ago, the pandemic changed life as we know it," Rosenworcel said at today's agency meeting. "We were told to stay home, hunker down and live online. So much of work, school, and healthcare migrated to the internet. If we wanted to engage with the world, we needed to do it all through a broadband connection.

When shopping for a power bank the most important spec you should look out for is capacity. This figure is always followed closely by a mAh unit, which stands for milliamp-hour. Given that most ultra-thin flagship phones have a 3,000mAh battery inside of them already, you're going to want to find a portable charger with at least that much capacity, so you can double the battery life of your handset—unless of course, you're looking for an extremely portable battery.

Can you bring portable power banks on a plane?

The short answer is yes, you are allowed to bring your power bank on the plane as long as they use litium ion or lithium metal batteries.
